The early Christians venerated martyrs, the dates of whose executions grew into a calendar of saints, and wearing a martyrs' halo is still extremely popular.

But martyr's halos do not come in the mail. A great amount of persecution faced by Christians today results not from what they believe, but from what they own, and from where they come.

Missionaries in poor countries lose their possessions, and sometimes their lives, because people associate them with foreign wealth. Other "martyrs" lose their lives in political conflict. But does having our vehicles and cameras stolen, our children kidnapped, or being killed for political "correctness," assure that we have "witnessed for Jesus" martyr means witness, Rev.

Real martyrs for Christ do not wear halos. They only carry crosses. Most people, even Christians, quickly discredit and forget these martyrs. Real martyrs suffer persecution, not like "great heroes of the faith" but like eccentrics and fools. Ordinary people usually consider them fanatics.

Does that disappoint or alarm you? Do not worry.God continues to bring the people of Israel to the Promised Land. Jews are returning to Israel from many different nations around the world, and thus speak a variety of different languages.

This is a great blessing for the local body of Messiah, but because of language and cultural barriers, it can also be a challenge for new immigrants to integrate into the believing community.

French (français)

There is a great need for Bibles that will have the Hebrew text side by side with another language, both to help new immigrants assimilate in the local body of Messiah, as well as for cross-cultural outreach.

As the Bible Society continues to equip the growing body of Messiah in the Promised Land, we have been enlarging our selection of Hebrew diglot Bibles. It is an encouraging resource for Israelis with Germanic roots, and for German speakers who come to serve here and show their love to the people of Israel.

It is a beautiful image of reconciliation through the Word of God. Many French Jews are also returning to live in Israel, and thousands more are frequently visiting Israel throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out to them and bring them the good news of the Word of God. Our latest diglot Bible is the Spanish-Hebrew Bible. It is not only a blessing to the Spanish-speaking community here in Israel.

We have seen many people from Central and South America, as well as Spain, being blessed by this Bible. Last Name. Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. Legals Sitemap.A story which Christian apologists have told for years involves the French philosopher Voltaire The story has been used repeatedly through the years by Christians as an example of the enduring intrinsic quality of the Bible and the futility of those who oppose the Inspired Volume. For years there have been those who dispute this story as to its validity.

Humanists, rationalists, agnostics, and atheists have called it an apocryphal story fabricated by Christians to bolster their argument that the Bible is inspired and possesses an intrinsic quality that enables it to withstand attacks by unbelievers. Ross contends the story has been either fabricated or it began as a misunderstanding and has spread. The question to consider, is there any validity to the story?

Did Voltaire ever make such a prediction? Is there proof that the home in which Voltaire once lived, that after his death, was used as a storehouse for Bibles? Voltaire was born in Paris, France in As a philosopher, historian and free thinker, he became a most influential and prolific writer during what has been called the Age of Enlightenment.

From the beginning, Voltaire had trouble with the authorities for criticisms toward the government. He twice served brief prison sentences in the Bastille for being critical of a Regent.

May not the brother-love Thy love portray? Wright Hay, VI PREFACt The purpose of this book is to give a survey of the extent and condition of the wholly unoccupied mission fields in Africa and Asia including Malaysia, from the standpoint of Protestant missions, and to consider the questions that bear on their occupation. The continent of South America has not been included for two reasons: the missionary problem there is so largely bound up with the condition of the Roman Catho- lic Church and has therefore such special character that it requires specific treatment ; and the continent as a whole with its unoccupied sections and large neglected non- Christian population has already received attention in mission study text-books.

To include South America would, moreover, have been impracticable in the compass of one volume for use in study classes. The entire world-area has not yet been wholly covered by tbe tracks of the explorer, much less by the triangulations of the surveyor or the tours of missionaries; nor has any kind of census been taken in many of the great unoccupied fields of the world.
